Vibration Test Systems - What Are They?

Have you ever wondered how manufacturers know that one of their products will hold together when it gets out in the real world? They use a vibration shaker system or a vibration test systems to make sure that it would not fall apart.

One of the purposes for these types of test systems is to make sure that the product being testing will be able to work appropriately in the real world. When the product is in the factory or in the research lab, there is not much pressure put on it. However, depending upon the purpose of the item, there is a great deal more pressure.

One of the most common types of examples used when talking about these kinds of systems is for items that are used in a car. Whether you are talking about part of the engine, something on the outside of the car, or even something inside the car's interior, there is a lot of shaking that happens when you drive a car down the road. Putting the item through some testing will ensure that it will still work as it is intended when it is actually inside the car.

Other types of testing are related to things like engines. When an engine is running at a low level, there probably is not much movement. However, when the engine is running at full force, there is a great deal of vibration that is has to absorb. The level that it has to deal with gets even larger depending upon what type of engine it is. It may also have to deal with bumps in the road, air pockets in the sky or waves in the water depending on whether the engine is for a car, plane or even a boat.

Another popular use of this type of testing is related to structures like bridges and buildings. In order to meet certain codes, these types of structures must be built in such a manner that they can withstand a certain level of movement. The type of structure plays a role toward how much movement is considered ok. The safety level of the structure also plays a role. For example, a 20 story skyscraper must be built in a manner that allows it to absorb a lot more movement than a one story home. A strong wind might damage the outside of your home, but if the skyscraper is not reinforced, it could be destroyed in bad weather.

You can see how important that it is to completely test all of these types of items. However, you can also probably see that it is not practical for all of this research and testing to be done in a real environment. It is critical to be able to replicate the conditions related to movement that the item will experience in the real world. Clearly, you cannot build a building to see how it will withstand vibration from the normal environment. You have to recreate this in a research and production setting. These machines allow you to do that.
