How Can You Reduce the Risk of Diseases and Prevent Obesity?

It is obvious that nutrition plays a huge role in our health. A poor nutrition can lead to many serious and life-threatening illnesses. On the other hand, a good and healthy nutrition can prevent diseases and even reduce the risk of other ones. The relationship between nutrition and human disease can take three forms: diseases in which nutrition plays some role, diseases with a strong nutritional element, and diseases caused by nutritional deficiencies.

Nutrient deficiencies nowadays occur mostly in developing countries, however being careless and not paying attention to your eating habits can result in the lack of consumption of essential nutrients. The following are some of the most common diseases caused by nutrient deficiencies:

* Pellagra: A vitamin deficiency disease caused by the lack of vitamin B3. Some of its characteristics are mental impairment, diarrhea, and skin rashes.
* Scurvy: A disease that is due to the lack of vitamin C, which is essential for the synthesis of collagen. Scurvy can lead to spongy gums and formation of spots, and advanced Scurvy can even cause the loss of teeth.
* Goiter: A most common cause for this disease is iodine deficiency. Some of the symptoms of Goiter are the swelling of the front area of the neck (thyroid gland) and increased heart rate.
* Rickets: A disease that involves the softening of bones. It can lead to deformities and fractures. It is caused by vitamin D deficiency; however, the lack of sufficient calcium can also be cause Rickets. It is most common in children in developing countries.

In developed countries, nutrient deficiencies are prevented with a well-balanced and abundant food supply and healthy foods that contain essential nutrients. There are some diseases such Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, and some types of cancers in which nutrition plays a small role. There are other diseases, however, that are strongly associated with nutrition including certain chronic diseases. The following are some well-known chronic diseases that have become more prevalent in the past years:

* Type 2 Diabetes
* High blood pressure
* Heart disease
* Obesity

Obesity, which has become extremely widespread in North America and especially amongst young adults, is caused by consuming too much food and exercising very little. Similarly, all the above Chronic diseases are affected by the constant intake of foods high in calories, total fat, saturated fat, and low in fruits, fiber, vegetables and whole grains.

In the case of obesity, it is important to become familiar with different fat loss diets, and to choose one that will allow you to lose weight, burn fat and become a healthier individual.

In all, it is very important to keep in mind the terms malnutrition, undernutrition and overnutrition. Malnutrition means “bad” nutrition, which refers to both undernutrition and overnutrition. Undernutrition is a diet that is low in energy and specific essential nutrients (nutrients that the body cannot produce, they must come from food or supplements). Overnutrition, is a diet that lacks the balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fats; containing too much energy can lead to diseases such as type 2 Diabetes and heart disease.

In order to reduce the risk of diseases, it is extremely important to be aware of what you are consuming on a daily basis.
