Setting Your Cellular Rhythm To Weight Loss

New research suggests that every cell in the human body has a daily cycle to its “housekeeping” activities and that early morning activity before breakfast can help set those activities towards weight loss.

A new research study in the world’s most famous physiology journal the Journal of Physiology shows that a simple bit of exercise before breakfast can do significantly more than burn calories.

While early morning exercise is known to have long lasting effects on boosting a persons metabolism throughout the day, the researchers in Denmark wanted to know what the lasting effects were on the newly discovered “clock” genes that are found in every cell of the human body. These clock genes regulate daily patterns of making and breaking down cellular proteins, the structures of all cells.

Other research from the United States has highlighted the importance of clock genes in reducing the effects of jet lag and helping shift workers maintain their daily schedules, but to date nothing had been known of the effects of clock genes on fat metabolism.

28 men and women were used in the research study and were exercised first thing in the morning upon awaking for 45 minutes with their choice of running or cycling. Immediately after the exercise and then twice more during the day the study subjects had a small piece of muscle tissue removed from their leg area. The research was then repeated but with the participants exercising after they had eaten their breakfast.

The researchers found that the genes and proteins related to fat burning or oxidation were turned up, way up, in the individuals after the early morning exercise session in comparison to the after breakfast exercise.

This, Dr. Bente Keins, study researcher, leads us to believe that many of the benefits of weight loss from early morning exercise are related to this increased synthesis of fat burning genes in the muscle and probably other cells that are activated by exercise before breakfast. In other words, you set your “clock” genes to burn fat as a priority for the day instead of store fat.

This research comes on the heels of recent studies from Belgium and the United States showing that early morning exercise is beneficial for protecting the overeating that often occurs during the recently passed Holiday Season.
